The Mistaken Miss

Kindle Romance

Price   -  $5.99

Philip is out for retribution. His father was imprisoned for debt, and the family ruined. Philip turns to crime, to pay off family debts and try to save his family. He returns to England after 10 years in the savage Australian penal colony looking for revenge.

He is determined to destroy Frederick Otway's only daughter, Johanna, and is sure he has convinced her to elope, but the girl he lures in is actually her twin sister Jasmine, and far from being self-satisfied at his achievement and eager to show her the door, he is stunned at the depth of the passion they share, and can't get enough of her.

It is only when Johanna flounces in demanding to know when they are to go to Gretna Green to be married, that Philip realizes his mistake. By then it is too late for both of them. They are in love as well and Jasmine's whole family and powerful Rakehell friends look set to turn their lives into a living hell.

The story feels rather rushed in its approach, as if MacMurrough couldn’t wait to finish so she could get on with the next story. Readers hardly have an opportunity to get to know the central characters, before they are in bed making long-drawn-out love. The characters have barely spoken before lust takes over. All in all it came across as rather contrived and stiff.

If you’re looking for a good bonking book, then this is the one for you. If you’re looking for an intricate believable plot, forget it.

One Wicked Night

Kindle Romance

Title - One Wicked Night
Author - Heather Boyd
Stars - 4
One Wicked Night:
Benedict is fed up of a celibate existence and resolves to leave his broken heart behind and get on with his life. He consents to an offer of a night of decadence in the arms of London’s notorious Lottie Townsend - she will cosset his every craving.

Lady Charlotte has fallen onto hard times and aches for one night of pleasure with the man she loves. Impersonating Lottie Townsend, a notoriously discerning courtesan and old friend, she covers her identity and summons Benedict to share the night of passion that fate previously denied them.

This is an erotic historical romance that is a delight to read. You feel passion running through both of them and find you are urging them to get together. Heather Boyd has used sensory detail to curve the reader into her tale. This is an erotic story, yet with romantic elements that are gratifying and a little unpredicted.

Looking For Trouble

 Kindle Romance

Author - Erin Kern
Price  -  $0.99

When Noah walks out into the morning sunshine, the last thing he envisages is being knocked down by a yellow Mercedes. His rage fades when he finds the driver has endless legs and deep eyes.

Avery, daughter of a publisher, ought to have followed her common-sense and not come to this back-of-beyond place.

Noah needs someone to organize his office. However, he did not want them to be the same person who left their bumper imprinted on his backside but there is little choice. As they spend more time together, Noah has the impression Avery isn’t who she says she is. Is she just a girl looking for a change or is there more going on than she’s telling him?

Avery adjusts to her new life in the attractive backwater. She has a job for the first time in her life and a boss who turns her on more than anyone else ever did. But did she make the right choice by leaving home or is she falling deeper into trouble?

This book is basically Chick-lit. However, there is more to it than that.  The main character is a strong, self-reliant woman. Erin Kern has created a fairly well-rounded character. The plot follows her break-up with an ex-boyfriend, and her search for something more.

The story has amusing scenes, poignancy, and a true-to-life feel about it. It was an easy read that slips down without hassle, as you follow the characters, and their trials and ordeals. Some of the descriptive writing is good but some a little OTT.  This book is one for the lassies, and will probably be a hit in its genre. Not the best written but readers will probably overlook the technical downside because of the good read

A Killing Tide

Kindle Romance

Author - P.J. Alderman
Price   - $0.99

Kaz Jorgensen is no stranger to anxiety, but this is different. A companion is dead, a pyromaniac has fired the Anna Marie, and her twin brother has disappeared, accused of arson and murder.

The fire chief, Michael Chapman, is dealing with personal loss. After transferring to town, he also has to deal with a fishing community that treats him as an outsider. After reports circulate raising questions about his prior job, he can't allow himself to become enmeshed with the sister of a suspect.

Central to any exciting romantic mystery is good characterization. Alderman endows the main characters with natural, human, flaws, and allows them to wrestle with instinctive feelings amid the investigation. They fear what they will eventually uncover, and their fear is transferred to readers. The characters become very real as you read. The support characters also feel genuine. All in all, a good read.

Sweet Revenge

Kindle Romance
Author - Nina Bruhns
Price   -  $2.99

Auri searches for a killer. What he finds is a woman who affects him as no other woman has ever done.

Auri is a man on a mission. Determined to put his foster-brother's killer behind bars, he has taken a leave of absence from New Orleans PD to hunt the man down.

Grace’s twin sister Muse, has vanished. Grace leaves her Charleston home and rushes to New Orleans' notorious French Quarter, where she installs herself in Muse's apartment. Grace becomes worried when she discovers a mysterious man watching her from the neighbouring balcony. Is he somehow involved in Muse's disappearance? Or is he after something much more dangerous?

SWEET REVENGE is a racy, fervid story of retribution, and love. There is also a large spoonful of old-fashioned desire. Tormented by memories and obsessed by the death of his brother, Auri is resolved to be alone. He doesn’t want contact with another person. Grace's acceptance of his dark side slowly erodes the demons plaguing Auri, but will it be enough?

Nina Bruhns has stuffed Grace and Auri’s tale with sufficient sexual strain for the most discerning reader, but it's the tender moments that will have you placing this book on your list of to-read-again. SWEET REVENGE is a story to recommend.

Slow Hands

Kindle Romance

Author - Leslie Kelly
Price   - Free (was $4.99)

Maddy, civilized society girl, makes a bid on sexy Jake at a charity bachelor auction, and wins. The problem is Maddy is aware that Jake has a grubby secret. It ought to stop her from testing out her new acquisition, yet she can't help herself from indulging in raw, primitive sex.

Jake is completely taken up with Maddy. How can this provocative woman soften so enthusiastically one moment, then turn into a supercilious doyenne the next? He is determined to establish just what Maddy’s intentions are.

If you are expecting adventure drama and action, then forget this book. There was plenty of talk-talk, lots of well written sentiment and passion, but you don’t come away from the book feeling excited by it. There was no great suspense to keep you turning those pages.

It was all right - okay - just a fundamental, happy ever after story.
